SHAH AND TABBY
A
friend has two Persian cats, a tabby; very sensible, but stone-deaf, and yet an excellent mouser; and a very beautiful, but stupid, white cat. Tabby is very honest, and can be trusted in the pantry, but Shah (the white cat) is, like many cats, a thief. Tabby, having seen Shah stealing in the pantry, placed himself at the door as sentinel, and on Shah making a second attempt drove him back with a smart box on the ears. Shah is a bad climber, and one day got up a tree in the garden and could not get down again. Tabby ran up and down several times to show him how to manage, and at last Shah scrambled down backwards very clumsily. Tabby watched for him, boxed his ears soundly when he got to the bottom, and then rushed up and down the tree mewing loudly, as much as to say, "Look, here, this is the way you ought to do it."
