A SURPRISED CAT

Tim was a hedgehog that my father procured to clear the garden of worms and snails. His arrival excited the curiosity of Toby, the cat; and as soon as he was set down in the kitchen, Toby advanced to examine this new and strange animal, and sniffing round him, when Tim, taking alarm, began to run away. Toby gave chase, when Tim suddenly tumbled over, and rolled himself up into a ball, presenting nothing but a for-midable array of prickles. This sudden transformation of a four footed animal into a spiky ball greatly astonished Toby. He stopped; then cautiously ap-proaching, he sniffed at it, and then gave it a smart pat, when, starting back and shaking his paw, he retired to a safe distance, and there sat down with his eyes fixed in wonder on Tim, who, knowing the danger was past, unrolled himself and began looking about his new quarters.
