BOOKS support note for local bookstores and libraries. We advise the development of a relationship with your local library and local bookstore, for that way both you and your source know your needs and expectations, and can come to share your knowledge and interests. This holds especially true when you deal with one particular librarian or with an independent book store.

If you can not locate a book at one of your local sources then by all means use the independent online sources, and if they can not meet your needs go to the big guns. Remembering that the big chains are in a position to end the existence of the independents and that they have already had a major effect on the publishing trade. Currently there is only one big gun aimed at them: Amazon.Com. For more on the subject of the ever-shrinking number of independent bookstores, check out this PBS program. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/entertainment/july-dec97/books_8-18.html

Or read this article from the June 8, 1998 Business Journal. http://www.amcity.com:80/sanjose/stories/060898/smallb1.html

The pending law suit against Barnes & Noble and Borders by ABA, Independent Bookstores is covered in detail at this site. http://www.bookweb.org/pressroom/
